Benjamin Ruggles, b. 21 Feb. 1782 in Abington, Conn., son of Benjamin Ruggles, b. 10 Aug. 1747 in Pomfret, Conn., and Elizabeth Durkee, b. 12 Oct. 1747 in East Woodstock, Conn.; he was educated in the common schools due to his father's financial situation and bypassed college to train as a lawyer in the law office of Judge Peters of Hebron, Conn.; when he had completed his studies Peters, he went West and rem. in 1807 to Marietta, Ohio to open a law office; in 1810 he removed to St. Clairsville as the elected President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas; in 1815 Judge Ruggles was elected to the U. S. Senate by the Whigs and was twice re-elected (serving 1816-1835); she d. 8 May 1817 in St. Clairsville, Ohio; she had three children: Saul Kellogg (1813-1899), Elizabeth Durkee (1815-1898), Tirzah Alvord (1817-1855); he m. (2) Clarissa White Alvord, the widow of Tirzah's brother Elijah, with whom he had no children; he d. 2 Sep. 1857 in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

O. Department in Washington, D. C., and lived at the corner of Ninth and G Streets; he d. 26 Sep. 1832 at his home after being suddenly taken with a severe cold that settled on his lungs; Harriet returned to Bolton and lived with her sister Eleanor; she d. 20 Mar. 1852 in Bolton, Conn.; had no children.
